INTRODUCTION
The National Radiation Commission (NRC) was established by an Act of Parliament from Radiation Act 5, 1983 and was declared a public corporate body on 22/07/1983. The Act provides for NRC functions in relation to the control of the use of radioactive materials, radiation devices and for other matters related to the protection of persons from harm resulting from ionizing radiation

FUNCTIONS AND OBJECTIVES OF THE COMMISSION
- Responsible for all matters relating to peaceful application of nuclear technology, with a view of ensuring the protection of workers and the public from harm resulting from unprotected application of ionizing radiation;
-To advise or provide information to the Government on the proper use of ionizing radiation in the light of current available knowledge, its possible hazardous effects and the methods necessary for enhancing the protection of the public:
-To formulate policy regarding the safe and peaceful use of atomic energy and other radioactive materials and radiation device in factories, mines, hospitals, military and other establishments or undertakings;
- In co-operation with any person or body of persons within or outside Tanzania, to carry out, sponsor or facilitate the carrying out of research for the purpose of ensuring the increased use of atomic energy in Tanzania;
- To carry out, or promote the carrying out of applied research designed at facilitating the evaluation, development and use of modern methods in the control or minimisation of the effects of ionising radiation or persons exposed to it;
- To establish and operate a system for the control of the importation, movement and use of radioactive devices, installations and materials;
-To consider applications for and grant licenses to persons intending to import or use atomic or other radioactive devices, installations or materials;
- To maintain a register of importers, users and operators of nuclear or other radioactive devices, installations or other radioactive materials. .

LINCENSING AND REGISTRATION
THE PROTECTION FROM RADIATION ACT AND ITS CODE OF PRACTISE REQUIRES THAT ALL RADIATION DEVICES SHOULD BE REGISTERED AND LICENSED BY THE NRC. THE LAW ALSO REQUIRES THAT ALL FOOD IMPORTS SHOULD BE ANALYSED AND LICENSED BY THE NRC. FAILURE TO COMPLY TO THE REQUIREMENT OF THE LAW WILL LEAD TO PROSECUTION.
